There are many ways to learn in The C# Academy. Our program is designed to let you customize your learning experience, whether you’re a complete beginner looking for a clear roadmap or an experienced developer aiming to fill in knowledge gaps. Let's explore how The C# Academy works!
Roadmap
We offer a series of projects designed to guide you from writing your first line of code to developing professional applications. Each project builds on the last, introducing new concepts and technologies. Once you register and log in, you can view the roadmap here.
Belt System
You'll notice that the roadmap is organized into levels, or belts, similar to martial arts. To advance to the next belt, you need to complete a series of tasks. On the roadmap page, you can see icons for the tasks you need to complete to advance to the next belt.
Leaderboard
We also have a leaderboard. You'll feature on the leaderboard as soon as you gain your first points. It's totally independent of the belt system. You can be at the top of the leaderboard and still be a White Belt. We've designed it this way so that you're not forced to follow the roadmap if you don't want to. We really want you to enjoy yourself!
Which Order Should You Follow?
It's totally up to you. If you're a professional developer with years of experience, you might jump straight to the section that's most relevant to you. If you're following the suggested roadmap and the belt system, here's a super brief overview of the order we recommend:
First Steps
You'll start by reading 6 short articles: Start Here, Getting Help, Setting Up, C# Foundations, The Importance of Console Applications and this guide. We don't want to bore you with a lot of reading, so the whole thing will take you less than an hour. But this preparation time will increase if you need to install .NET from scratch.
Microsoft Certification
Then you'll jump onto the Freecodecamp Certification (FCC). We warn you that many people say it can get boring. However, it provides important knowledge before you start building. And it gives you a Microsoft Certificate! We recommend you do it. If you find it unbearable, divide and conquer. Do one section a day. In parallel, get started with the Math Game. Reading the articles, completing FCC and finishing the Math Game will earn you a Green Belt.
Console Area
After this first quick win, complete the Console Area and build your Resume and Portfolio. This will take you all the way up to Red Belt. If you create a solid study routine you can complete it in a couple of months. However, those who complete it very quickly usually have a good amount of previous programming experience. If you're an absolute beginner, give yourself some time and think of it as a marathon!
Full Stack
The next step is to submit your resume and portfolio to achieve your Red Belt and move on to the Full Stack development area of your choice. While it might seem like we're recommending you to learn ASP.NET Core front-end solutions since it's the first option after the Apply for Jobs area, that's not the case. You can choose any of the following: ASP.NET Core MVC, Angular, React, Blazor, or MAUI. And we'll be including more options soon!
More Than Projects
More than projects, we also offer Code Challenges, Courses and a VIP Membership/MentorshipFree style projects and VIP Area. And as you go through the Roadmap, you'll notice that some levels have extra requirements, carefully designed to make you a well-rounded developer: Open Source Contributions, Code Reviews, Flagship Project. Let's see what these are about.
Courses
Learning on your own is great but sometimes we need a more structured approach to learn a single topic. For this we created the Courses Area. Due to popular demand we started our course library with a single course on Object Oriented programming. Right now we have a total of five courses available with one more on React being prepared right now. Courses are not required to progress through our belt system, so you can choose to do only the ones you think are necessary and whenever want.
Tasks are available for all skill levels, from fixing typos to creating entire features, so we encourage you to try these sooner rather than later. Contributing to large projects will leave you with a sense of accomplishment! Plus contributing to our open source projects is a requirement to achieve belts higher than Orange.
Community Projects
As a professional developer, you'll often collaborate in teams, exploring large codebases built and maintained by various hands. We provide this experience by letting you collaborate with our website via our open source repository. If you find a ticket that you want to tackle or if you want to fix a bug or add a new feature, you can use this board. You can also tackle existing tickets in the board. Reach out on Discord via the #communityproject channel and we'll give you permissions to assign yourself to tickets in the board.

Code Reviews
Starting from Yellow Belt, you'll also be expected to contribute through code reviews. With hundreds of projects being submitted weekly, ensuring everyone receives a thorough review is only possible with the assistance of advanced students. Not only will you be helping the academy, but you'll also benefit from the reviews, gaining more experience with git workflow and honing your communication skills.
Code Challenges
With the integration of Codewars, we offer a series of code challenges to test your knowledge in a fun way. You'll also be able to record daily streaks to help you create the habit of coding a little bit every day. This feature has just been launched, and more challenges are being prepared and will be integrated into the curriculum, including Leetcode. Click here to see the challenges. You can only see the ones that are visible to your belt.
Cloud Development
To attain a Black Belt, you'll also need to grasp the basics of Azure Cloud Services. This section will instruct you on deploying apps and databases to the cloud and constructing serverless systems. While this section might have been optional a few years ago, the current job market demands proficiency in cloud development. It's featured in most job postings and empowers you to built better and more engaging systems.
Flagship Project
Last but not least, we have the Personal Flagship Project, where you get to decide what to build. This project includes a list of features to ensure it's complex enough to be a key feature in your portfolio. However, it's designed to get you even more motivated by allowing you to work on something you're passionate about. There's plenty of room for creativity! We suggest you start thinking about it early in your journey. If you don't have any interesting ideas, there's nothing wrong in using one of our existing projects and adding your personal touch.
Express Yourself
In fact, all our projects have requirements that ensure you're learning the topics you need to become a developer. We're constantly updating them to reflect what's in demand by the industry. But beyond meeting these requirements, we suggest you always try to add your personal touch. When I started, I built several apps for things I deeply cared about: Football, languages, personal finance. I had a great time creating a Fifa World Cup app with Blazor when it was first launched. I suggest you do the same: build things you're passionate about so you have the motivation to make them stand out. In all projects, you can use your own business case and ideas. This concept is backed by science. People learn much better when they apply what's being studied to things they relate to and care about. Keep this in mind and you'll always be motivated!
Freestyle Projects
We also give you the opportunity to submit projects without any specific requirements for review. Had an interesting idea but can't be bother creating a big app for it? Send it our way and we'll review it! We repeat: the best way to learn is enjoying yourself and there's no better way to do that than expressing your creativity. Points will be rewarded based on creativity and complexity.
